Another Thursday The latest catchup went to May 8. Most of my new lab-full of computers has arrived and works, despite running Vista. (One of the 7 machines has gone missing in transit. The vendor is tracking it down. Jackie@GovConnection++) I've been limiting my social contact for over a month. I know why, which helps a little. But it still means missing a lot of dancing. Much of my superhero knowledge comes from television - after school and saturday morning cartoons and live action. Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Flash stand out. I had forgotten Iron Man until the movie came out, so I didn't notice them using the 60s theme song. According to IMDB "The theme song from "Iron Man" (1966) is played in several shots (in the casino scene; in Stark's bedroom scene and finally it is the personalized ring tone for Stark on James Rhodes cell phone)." (Note to werewulfmom: IMDB lists quotes again. Instead of linking to the character name they put it at the bottom of the movie's page.) |

"She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid." (Because I was on my bike) I was having so much fun on my commute to work I overshot by an extra half mile. (Because I was on my bike) I was early, so overshooting and having to go back was no problem. May is National Bike to Work Month. Current Mood: happy |

deep gratitude Hey gang, I wanted to take a free minute to thank people for the unbelievable amount of support and kindness you've been showing me and John these last few weeks (and, lets face it, YEARS) but since I'm not going to GET a free minute I might as well do it now.:) To everyone who wanted to be there sent us good wishes electronically, thank you. I'd list you, but there are too many, and its all documented for everyone to see anyway.:) You were there. Don't sweat it. To everyone that sent love and hugs and good wishes by personal courier, thanks. Kate, Michael, Scott, Stacia, Leila, thank you so much. Kind thoughts really do make a world of difference. To the friends we don't get to see often who came to be there for us, thank you so so much. Gary and Susan, Lawrence, Denis, Eric, Tom B, Brian, Ben, Barb, Dave L. Thank you. Friendly faces in that sea of strangers were an enormous comfort, and seeing you always makes me feel like the world hangs together by more than just spit and bailing wire. I want to especially thank Shelly. As always, you are a deeply comforting and fortifying presence. I'm really glad you were there. To the friends we get to see a little more often but never often enough who showed up to support and entertain us throughout, Sean, Rebecca, Ken, Moira, Mike, Laura, thank you for being there. Its hard to acknowledge you like you deserve because when things are hard you're more like oxygen than friends, quietly and perfectly keeping everything alive. Thank you thank you thank you. I want to especially thank Ninja and Hugh for showing up on their way to New York to be with Del, and to Del, and to Hugh for his services graveside when called upon at the last minute. There's nothing profound enough, so I'll be trite. The three of you are made of awesome. To my family who came, Mom and Dad, Greg and Lobo, thank you. You take such good care of me. I can't possibly deserve you. And Liz and Joe. I know you were there.:) And the hubby thanks you too, and deserves acknowledgement of his own for being such a sweet, conscientious, strong, and thoughtful son, brother, husband, and host throughout this ordeal. A lot of you have been asking me how he's doing. He's ok. We've both been parsing this whole thing in bits for the last year, and there's still some stuff to work on, but its not overwhealming. Mostly its just that good pain of missing someone proportionate to how much you will always love them, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Current Mood: okay |

adventure I went for an adventure by my self in NYC saturday to go see my highschool sweetheart Renate in a Circus/theater performance thing. I leave the house at 11:30, catch every single light and blocked box intersection through down town because there was a parade and something going on at Ravens stadium that made people drive stupid and wear cowboy hats. I pull up to the Greyhound Station in the middle of the architectual salvage parks, convenient to nothing with no time to spare and find the parking lot closed for event parking. I get some street parking and trot back a couple blocks to the station. And then I wait for 45 minutes because the bus was late.
I get a seat and read, doze and what not while we spend 3 hours stuck on 95 in Delaware. We get into Wilmington and find that the bridge we want to take is closed so we go for a fun detour through some residential streets. Downtown Wilmington on a weekend is the perfect set for a zombie movie. Completely deserted city. We went by a sub shop I got a Cheese Steak that had catsup on when Trinity Project played there last.
So I in Wilmington about the time I was planning on arriving in NYC. Good thing I planned on a lot of buffer time to just wander around. As we pull into the big Apple around 7 I start really wondering if I could master the Subway system with my minimal planning and have it deliver me to my destination in time.
I grab some beef jerky from a bodega to break some change and ask where the subway even is. Time is potentially short so I get my pass, double check the line I need and decide not to second guess my self (but to verify when I can). I get on the A downtown and check the system map. The spanish speaking guy next to me is doing the same thing, but even more deliberately. I mime the route I am taking, he mimes the same route which includes a transfer. I point to the next stop as we pull into the station and point to the stop name on the pole. Then I point where we have to transfer and hold up 3 fingers for how many stops until then. I think he mimed asking me if I was a musician. I mimed playing a trumpet because it's almost the same for tuba and I don't know how in gestures knob twiddling keytar playing would be received.
Subway delivered me right on time to pick up my reserve ticket before they started giving out the no shows. I sit by Renate's parents and chat about knitting to her mom who saw me in the paper when they did their story on young hip knitting circles.
Renate is in a group called Cirque This! I'm still at a loss to fully explain their performance other than Fevered Dream like. I'll try and figure this out before their next show because it was awesome and you really should go see them. I get to spend a good couple of minutes after the show talking to Renate which is more than I have seen her in years due to only catching up on holidays when she is back in Baltimore and during her wedding.
I decide against going to the cast party and instead go to Mehanata, a Bulgarian bar known for Balkan Beat. I find my way there with only a street address and a vague recollection of what subway lines run that way and intersect. Hungry March had played there and the tuba player was leaving as I was paying to get in. I missed the Bulgarian buffet they had out to celebrate the new kitchen opening. Went downstairs and enjoyed the music and the laser lights everywhere. I forgot my earplugs and you only get so many hours of loud in your life so I took off and wandered around. I saw fancy bars with lines to get in and people posturing looking like they were too cool and well dressed to have fun. Mehanata was filled with nothing but smiles, I know which crowd I want to be with.
The corner Deli/Grocer was open 24 hours so I got a decent BLT for $3 and $0.89 cup of coffee that was really good.
I didn't feel like planning much, tracking down friends and finding a place to stay so I had a return trip ticket at 3:45am so there was some time to kill. I wandered around by Times Square a bit. The street kabob was really tasty. Then I saw the most amazing thing ever. There was a guy walking around with a cat sitting on his head. I had to call Amy. "What is the cat doing?" she asked. Me: "sniffing the awning of a strip club". I was getting tired of walking so I evaluated the choices of seeing a midnight movie or reading in Port Authority. I wasn't sure when the movies let out so I went to read until the bus came.
Bus took me back to Baltimore, I slept on my tailbone and hurt my neck a bit but sleep was sleep and I needed it. Car was safe and I got back home by 7:30am where the cats had replaced me in my spot in the bed. |

An Open Letter To My Pagan Friends As my pagan friends tend also to be the most ecologically aware, most of you know that the local area has been in danger of a drought for the last several years. And it would not surprise me if many of my pagan friends have decided to make, in public or private, in rituals or prayers, pleas for there to be rain within this region.
Please stop.
If you feel that your local area has not yet received enough rain, please come to my house, where in the basement - where I and my wife live - we currently have over 300 gallons of rainwater which has kindly seeped in through the baseboards and lovingly covered all of our floors. If you do visit, bring a bucket.
Also, if there is a way to get a mulligan for this month, I would like to know about it.
Sincerely yours, John, Rebecca, and Soggy The Shop-Vac*.
*Soggy remains, no offense, the best wedding present we have ever received. Soggy has recently confided in me that his life-long ambition is to vacuum up something dry. Maybe next year, Soggy. |

Twenty-six days I'm counting down the days until the release of D&D 4E, and every preview I see makes me more interested in the new system they've got. I'm hoping to host a one-shot session locally (in addition to the campaign that is continuing into 4E with [Unknown LJ tag])!
I got my shoes soaked last night after a thorough drenching in the rain after tennis. Hung out and played tennis with some local friends in the apartment complex, played some Mario Golf, and then Serena cooked tacos. Mmmm, tacos. The reason I mention the shoe thing is that I wore my boots to work today, and my feet feel signifiantly better. Time to get some inserts when my shoes dry...
I've been consumed with FF: Tactics lately. So very detailed! I got my Calculator up to speed in time for the initial battle with Wiegraf, and she's already kicking ass. Oh, the intrigue. |

Administrator Absence Hello everyone, Unfortunately due to some unforeseen complications with my pregnancy, I am being admitted to hospital on May 12th 2008. I'm not sure how long I will be gone for. I imagine I should be home again by mid-June, but I make no promises. It is only precautionary, and the baby and myself are both healthy. I'll just be stuck there for a while. Because I am the main administrator for the site ,and this has happened unexpectedly, the site will be a little less organised than usual. Test marking and mentoring, preliminary emails and automated systems should run as normal. The main delay I can see is that there WILL NOT be a new test published in June. I shall endeavour to get one done as soon as possible, but since I cannot guarantee it I would rather warn people that there may be a wait. I hope you're all well, and I shall see you when I get back home. All the best, Asli Current Mood: busy |

Which Goddess lurks in your soul? | Which Goddess lurks in your soul? Hecate You hold more power in your little finger than most do in their entire being! Hecate is perhaps the most selective of all deities who inhabit the souls of mortals. Being the goddess of the crossroads, Cosmic Knowledge, and of course witches and magic she can’t be bothered by residing in the souls of the mundane. She often chooses those who practice the craft of the old ways and those who harbor deep mystical secrets that must be kept close. Your soul is old, perhaps having been present at the birth of the cosmos in some form or another. Your ability to comprehend the necessity of death and it’s beauty have awakened a connection to the underworld, where Hecate has been known to reign and you relish this otherworldly bond. Darkness suits you well, as many of the best secrets of the cosmos can be found there.
